From Where do the Messengers Come?


In Isaiah 18, the "land shadowing with wings" or whirring wings is not the focal point of the chapter. It is an un-named nation "which is beyond the rivers of Cush". As mentioned earlier, in the chapter the third country is not the focus of destruction. Instead, it is a nation that sends its ambassadors to the fourth country mentioned in verse two.

Woe to the land shadowing with wings, which is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia:

Readers find the mention of "Ethiopia" in verse 1 and assume that the passage is about it. The passage is not about "Ethiopia". The real name here is "Cush". The real identity of Cush does not change the reference to America later in the chapter. Cush is a nation that helps identify another nation which is the "land shadowing with wings". The "land shadowing with wings" is not the focal point of this chapter either. Instead, it is a nation that sends its ambassadors to the nation in verse two.

The land of whirring wings would be the land beyond the rivers of Cush from the perspective of the people of Israel who were the first intended listeners. In verse 1 "beyond" must mean on the other side of the rivers of Cush or Iraq with respect to Israel; that is, the land east of Iraq. There are two countries that are mentioned in the Bible east of the Tigris and Euphrates: Persia, known today as Iran (mentioned 25 times) and India (Esther 1:1 and 8:9). The country just beyond Cush is Iran. The country that sends its "ambassadors" to other countries in the way described in this passage is could be Iran.

Could Iran be the Country that Sends the Messengers?
From Israel's perspective, there is more than one country beyond the rivers of Cush; that is Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India at least a dozen more. Today we see an unprecedented threat to America from one of these known as Iran. When Soviet Russia developed its nuclear program America could rely on Russia understanding the principle of mutually assured destruction. Each country knew that a first strike would most likely result in both countries being destroyed. Neither America nor Russia wanted that. What’s different today? Iran has entered the picture. Iran does not necessarily believe the theory of mutually assured destruction, and moreover, Iran may not care. It would be an honor for Iran to destroy America even if Iran was destroyed themselves. Iran is not a sane country or a peaceful country. Iran has embarked on a mission to develop nuclear bombs. If Iran wanted uranium for peaceful purposes only, they would let international inspectors verify what they were doing with it. The spin-off technology Iran has procured can be used to separate uranium isotopes needed to make nuclear bombs. Iran is making nuclear warheads. Iran has developed the Shihab or "shooting star" missile for offensive purposes. Going on from there we see that on March 18, 2005 Ukraine’s prosecutor general’s office confirmed that nuclear capable cruise missiles have been illegally sold to China and Iran. Svyatoslav Piskun, Ukraine’s prosecutor general said eighteen Soviet-era X-55 (Kh-55) cruise missiles were exported in 2001. Twelve went to Iran and six went to China. If the swift messengers were successfully sent from the southeast tip of America they could reach population centers containing over 40 million Americans. Iran wants to destroy America. Here are some indications of the mentality of Iran’s president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his followers:

  1. June 3, 2007 Ahmadinejad said, "With God's help, the countdown button for the destruction of the Zionist regime has been pushed by the hands of the children of Lebanon and Palestine," "By God's will, we will witness the destruction of this regime in the near future,".
  2. Ahmadinejad said the Holocaust was a "myth,"
  3. He said, "We don't shy away from declaring that Islam is ready to rule the world."
  4. Ahmadinejad said Israel should be relocated to Europe. He has also declared his desire for Israel to be "wiped off the face of the map."
  5. Iran held a conference called "The World Without Zionism". It ended with chanting "Death to Israel!" and "Death to America!"
  6. Iran is moving money to Asia. It is switching to Euro dollars for oil transactions. On February 17, 2008, the first phase of the Iranian oil bourse opened which sells oil in Euros.
  7. Iran has announced that they had broken IAEA seals on its nuclear facilities.
  8. Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Hassan Rowhan, admitted to Iran's leading Islamic clerics and academics that it completed the installation of equipment needed to convert yellow cake at its Isfahan plant while at the same time fooling the west into believing nothing was happening. Iran reported it has begun using its 3,000 centrifuges in an expansion of its uranium enrichment program.
  9. Iran secretly tested a new surface-to-surface missile (SSM) on January 17, 2006 seeking to establish the measurements needed for long-range missiles.
  10. On January 28, 2006 Safavi said that Iran would use its ballistic missiles if it were attacked. Also September 1, 2007 Ayatollah Ali Khamenei replaced Safavi with General Mohammad-Ali (Aziz) Jaafari. Safavi is now senior advisor and assistant in military affairs to Ali Khamenei.
  11. "Iran has a ballistic missile with a range of 2,000 kilometers," he said on Iranian public television. "We do not intend to attack any country, but if we are attacked, we are capable of effectively responding. Our position is defensive."
  12. Iran said any military action by the U.S. or Israel against Iran would have "severe consequences" and would be countered "by all means" at Iran's disposal.
  13. In November 2005, a video surfaced showing Mr. Ahmadinejad telling a cleric that he had felt the hand of God entrancing world leaders as he delivered a speech to the UN General Assembly in September 2004. He claimed to have been bathed in a divine light as he spoke at the UN.
  14. Ahmadinejad the former mayor of Tehran reportedly spent no money on his presidential campaign. He won by getting the backing of powerful conservatives who used their network of mosques to mobilize support for him. He will most likely support that religious ideology.
  15. The most disturbing aspect of Mr. Ahmadinejad's views is his devotion to a divine savior, known as the Mahdi, who will he believes will appear in the last days.
  16. He and his cabinet have signed a "contract", pledging to work for the return of the Mahdi. Ahmadinejad believes that Israel and America are somehow preventing the appearance of the Mahdi.
  17. When an aircraft crashed in Teheran recently, killing 108 people, Mr. Ahmadinejad promised an investigation. But he also thanked the dead, saying: "What is important is that they have shown the way to martyrdom which we must follow."
  18. On July 8, 2006 Ahmadinejad called for Israel to be wiped out. He added all the conditions were in place to accomplish this. Two days later, Hezbollah gathered for a meeting. After another two days, Hezbollah kidnapped two soldiers and murdered another eight.
  19. Most recently Iran has let the world know it has guided missiles it named "Qased" or which means "messenger" or "harbinger".




What About Other Countries?
It is possible. Pakistan, for example, lies beyond the rivers of Cush. Pakistan has nuclear weapons. In addition, the new power structure of the country may have shifted now that Pervez Musharraf lost the last election Febnruary 18, 2008. Are they capable? Yes, America is too confident that no other country can touch it.




What Does AMERICA Need To Do?
Woe to the land in verse 1 but also woe to the nation scattered and peeled, the people terrible from their beginning hitherto; the nation meted out and trodden down, whose land the rivers have spoiled. A nation which appears to be the United States will be destroyed. That’s why it will not play a huge portion in the tribulation. Iran is the most likely culprit. If it is Iran, America has a problem that we see even today. It is knocking at the door. America has a problem that it needs to deal with immediately.
